Libreville, 17 July 2026 ( Gabonese Republic) - The headquarters of the Economic Community of Central African States, ECCAS, hosted a high-level meeting between the new Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Central Africa and Head of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa, UNOCA, S.EM. Mohamed El-Amine Souef and the Chairman of the ECCAS Commission, Ambassador Dr. Ezekiel Nibigira.
This first official visit by the Comorian diplomat at the head of UNOCA takes place in a context marked by security, humanitarian and governance challenges in the subregion.
At the heart of the discussions is the strengthening of the strategic partnership between the UN and ECCAS for peace, security and development in Central Africa. The two senior leaders reaffirmed their willingness to speak with one voice on the crises in the region, including the Lake Chad basin, the CAR and eastern DRC.
"ECCAS remains a key partner for the UN. Our action can only be effective in complementarity and coordination," said the UNOCA Chief at the end of the hearing.
Ambassador Dr. Ezekiel NIBIGIRA welcomed "the renewed engagement of the United Nations alongside Central Africa" and called for increased UN support for ECCAS initiatives, including through its Peace and Security Council, COPAX.
This visit marks the beginning of the term of office of Mr. Mohamed El-Amine Souef at the head of UNOCA. It aims to give new impetus to cooperation between the two institutions based in Libreville.
The two interlocutors agreed to establish a permanent mechanism for consultations, based on regular exchanges between their joint teams.
